How to open a company in Dubai, step by step

  1. Day 0

    Structure and activity

Free zone or mainland, licence activity and visa count. This choice drives the cost, the bank and the tax outcome — it is where we earn our fee.

  2. Days 1–3

    Licence application

KYC, passport copies and application filed directly with the authority. No flight, no notary trip: everything is signed remotely.

  3. Days 3–5

    Licence issued

Trade licence, MOA and establishment card in hand. Your company legally exists and can sign contracts.

  4. Weeks 1–3

    Residence visa

Entry permit, status change if you are in the UAE, medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and visa stamping.

  5. In parallel

    Bank account

Prepared file and introductions with banks that match your profile. Decision times vary from days to weeks — see the honest part below.

What you need

Documents required to register a company in Dubai

For a standard free zone setup with individual shareholders, this is the whole list.

Valid for at least 6 months, for every shareholder and director.

Passport photo

Recent, white background — the authority uses it for the visa file.

Contact and address details

Personal address and phone/email for KYC.

Short activity description

What the company sells and to whom — we draft the licence wording.

Corporate documents

Only if a company (not a person) will be a shareholder: incorporation set, attested.

Extra approvals

Only for regulated activities: finance, health, education, legal.

Three zones, three logics

What it really costs

How much does it cost to set up a company in Dubai?

These are the official authority rates for year 1, whether you incorporate at IFZA, Meydan or DMCC — the number the brochures show is rarely the number you pay once visas and mandatory add-ons land. Compare the total, not the headline.

Same data as the table — official 2026 rates, AED.

  • IFZA includes the flexi desk and the first employee visa government fee for life; medical + Emirates ID (~AED 900 per visa) and the establishment card (AED 2,200) are part of the totals above — every term is defined in the glossary below.
  • Meydan figures come from the zone’s own 2026 cost calculator and include VAT: licence AED 12,125/year + mandatory shared desk AED 375 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation Dirham fees (AED 10 each, charged on Dubai government transactions), visa allocation AED 1,850 per person per year, immigration card AED 2,000, investor visa processing AED 4,000 (employee AED 3,500) and medical + Emirates ID AED 2,250. Multi-year setups get an automatic 15% discount on licence and visa allocation fees.
  • DMCC is the premium jurisdiction: AED 50,000 reference share capital, mandatory annual audit, flexi desk from AED 16,800/year.
  • Renewals: IFZA from AED 12,900/year, DMCC AED 38,910/year. If Dubai is not a must, RAKEZ (Ras Al Khaimah) starts at AED 6,000 all-in. Our service fee is quoted separately — always itemised.

After year 1

Dubai company renewal costs after year 1

The setup price is only half the story: every licence renews annually and every visa renews on a two-year cycle. This is the part most providers leave out of the quote.

Annual renewal from year 2 (AED)

Annual recurring government cost by free zone and visa count, 2026 official rates
Dubai free zoneNo visas1 visa3 visas
IFZA · Silicon Oasis AED 12,900AED 17,100AED 21,100
Meydan FZ AED 12,520AED 14,370AED 18,070
DMCC · JLT AED 38,910AED 38,910AED 38,910

Visa renewal every 2 years (AED, added to the annual)

Biennial visa renewal government cost by free zone and visa count, 2026 official rates
Dubai free zoneNo visas1 visa3 visas
IFZA · Silicon Oasis AED 0AED 900AED 10,200
Meydan FZ AED 0~AED 8,450~AED 22,150
DMCC · JLT AED 0AED 3,770AED 11,310

IFZA’s first employee visa fee is included for life, so its first renewal only pays medical + Emirates ID (~AED 900). Meydan’s annual line includes the yearly visa allocation (AED 1,850 per visa); its biennial estimate re-runs visa processing, medical + Emirates ID and the immigration card renewal (AED 2,200) at the zone’s published rates. DMCC renews flat regardless of visas because visa fees bill separately.

The honest section

Opening a business bank account in Dubai, honestly

Opening a UAE business account involves compliance review of your activity, your flows and your residency. With a clean file and a residence visa it is routine; with a remote-only setup and high-risk activities it can take weeks or fail.

What we do: we prepare the file the way compliance teams want to read it and introduce you to banks that match your profile — including fintech alternatives when a traditional account is slow.

What nobody can do: guarantee an approval. The decision always rests with the bank. Anyone who promises you a guaranteed account is overselling — that is the test to run on any provider you talk to.

FAQ

Setting up a company in Dubai: your questions, with numbers

How long does it take to open a company in Dubai?

The trade licence is typically issued within 3 to 5 working days in free zones like IFZA. The residence visa process (entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping) adds 1 to 3 weeks. The bank account runs in parallel and can take from days to several weeks depending on your profile.

Can I start a company in Dubai without travelling to the UAE?

Yes. The licence, corporate documents and establishment card are processed fully remotely. You only need to enter the UAE when you activate your residence visa (for the medical test and biometrics), and some banks require one in-person meeting.

Can a foreigner own 100% of a Dubai company?

Yes. Free zone companies have always allowed 100% foreign ownership, and since the 2021 reform of the Commercial Companies Law most mainland activities do too — no local sponsor or Emirati partner is required for the large majority of business activities.

Should I choose a free zone or mainland company?

Free zone is the default for international services, consulting and trading: lower entry cost (from AED 12,520 in Dubai government fees), faster setup and the flexi desk covers the address requirement. Mainland is required when you sell to the local UAE market, need physical premises or bid for government contracts.

How much does it cost to set up a company in Dubai?

In Dubai, year-1 government fees start at AED 12,520 at Meydan FZ (VAT included, per its own 2026 calculator) and AED 12,900 at IFZA without visas (AED 18,000 with one founder visa), up to AED 50,985 at DMCC, the premium jurisdiction. If Dubai itself is not a must, RAKEZ in Ras Al Khaimah starts at AED 6,000 all-in. Service fees are charged on top — a serious provider always shows both numbers separately.

How much does the Dubai residence visa cost?

At IFZA, all government steps for one founder visa add about AED 5,100 to the licence in year 1 — and the first employee visa government fee is included for life. At Meydan, one investor visa adds about AED 10,100 in year 1 (allocation, immigration card, processing, medical and Emirates ID). Medical plus Emirates ID runs about AED 900 per visa, and the establishment card costs AED 2,200.

Is opening a UAE business bank account guaranteed?

No — and anyone who guarantees it is overselling. The decision always rests with the bank after compliance review of your activity, flows and residency. With a clean file and a residence visa it is routine; remote-only setups and high-risk activities take longer or may need fintech alternatives.

What taxes does a Dubai company pay?

Corporate tax is 9%, and only on profit above AED 375,000 — below that it is 0%. Qualifying free zone income can remain at 0% under the QFZP regime. There is no personal income tax on salary or dividends. VAT is 5%, with mandatory registration above AED 375,000 annual turnover.

Do I need a physical office to open a company in Dubai?

Not in a free zone: a flexi desk or included business address (standard in Dubai packages like IFZA and Meydan) satisfies the legal requirement and supports up to 3 visas. A physical office is only required for mainland companies or when your visa count outgrows the flexi desk.

What does it cost to keep the company alive each year?

Renewals from year 2 in Dubai: IFZA from AED 12,900 per year without visas (about AED 17,100 with one visa) and DMCC AED 38,910 flat. Visas renew every 2 years — at IFZA the first visa renewal only pays the medical and Emirates ID (~AED 900).

Can my family get residence visas through my company?

Yes. Once you hold a residence visa as founder or employee of your company, you can sponsor your spouse and children, subject to minimum salary requirements and their own medical and Emirates ID process.

Does my business activity affect the price?

Yes. General consulting, services and trading fit standard licences at the listed rates. Regulated activities — financial, medical, legal, education — carry additional government approvals and fees, and some are restricted to specific jurisdictions like DIFC or ADGM.

Is there a minimum share capital to set up a company in Dubai?

In most Dubai free zones there is no paid-up capital requirement: IFZA and Meydan let you declare a nominal share capital without depositing it. The exception is DMCC, with a reference share capital of AED 50,000. Mainland requirements depend on the activity, and regulated sectors set their own thresholds.

How long are the licence and the residence visa valid?

The trade licence is annual — it renews every year (IFZA from AED 12,900, DMCC AED 38,910). The residence visa is typically valid for 2 years. To keep the visa alive you should not stay outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days; the investor visa option at IFZA relaxes this to one entry every 12 months.

Do I have to live in Dubai — and what about my personal tax residency?

You do not have to live in Dubai to own the company. But owning a UAE company does not automatically change your personal tax residency: if you remain tax-resident in your home country, its rules (CFC, management-and-control tests, reporting) can still reach the company. We flag this before you commit — for a plan tailored to your country, talk to us.

Can I change free zone or move to mainland later?

Yes, but it is a migration, not a switch: the usual route is incorporating a new entity in the target jurisdiction, moving contracts and bank accounts, then winding down the old licence. It is manageable — and far cheaper to choose the right zone first, which is exactly what the initial assessment is for.

Does a company give me a Golden Visa?

Not by itself. The standard route through your company is the 2-year partner or employee residence visa. The 10-year Golden Visa has separate tracks — including public investments and property ownership from AED 2 million — and can complement your company setup; we assess eligibility case by case.
